Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of finding descriptive keywords and phrases that your potential customers would use to find your site. According to Trellian Keyword Discovery, over 80% of all online transactions begin with a keyword search. To be successful in a specific niche online you must market effectively by researching the keywords specific to your industry and services.

Come up with your initial list of keywords.

Keep in mind that audience you're targeting typically doesn't work in your industry, so you'll need to brainstorm and come up with a list of keywords that help promote your niches. This includes thinking of phrases that are broad and targeted, buying and research-oriented, and single and multi-word. Come up with enough keywords for targeting your industry.

In researching your keywords, avoid redundancies and broad, generic terms. These are hard to rank for and won't drive qualified traffic to your site. Ask your clients and colleagues for help, and run a search yourself for keywords for competitors. Then, view the source of their pages to analyze why they're placing so well with the search engines.

Narrow Your Keywords.

Now, it's time to narrow your list to only include highly attainable, descriptive keywords and sought-after phrases that will bring the most qualified traffic to your site. There are tools available on the Internet that you can use to research your keywords. Google has several useful tools for analyzing your keywords in their Google Tools. Yahoo and Overture also have tools to aid in your keyword research. The following describes some of these tools:

  • Overture's Keyword Selector tools show you how many searches have been conducted over the last month for a particular phrase and lists alternative search terms. Use this SEO tool to submit a list of keywords or key phrases.

  • Wordtracker is a fee-based tool used for looking up popular keyword phrases to determine their activity and popularity among competitors. Their top 1000 report lists the most frequently searched for terms. Their Competition Search option provides information to determine the competitiveness of each phrase, which helps you determine how difficult it will be to rank with the phrase.

  • Trellian Keyword Discovery tool is a subscription-based tool that helps you analyze the market share value for a given search term, see how many users search for it daily, identify common spellings and misspellings and discover which terms are impacted by seasonal trends.

  • Google AdWords Keyword PPC tool works best with short keywords of one or two words in length. You can also key in your URL and it will scan your pages and suggest relevant keywords.

  • Google Analytics is a tool that will help you analyze where your visitors come from and how they interact with your site.

  • Google Suggest: is a great way to find synonyms and related word suggestions that may help you expand your original list. Google Suggest guesses what you are typing when you're entering a term and offers suggestions in real time that you may be able to use on your keyword list.

  • Thesaurus.com: Another way to locate synonyms to your keywords.

Narrow the Key-word list more.

Once you've tested the keyword activity, narrow down your list more. Put your keywords in a spreadsheet or some other document, so you can compare each word's conversion rate, search volume and competition rate. Go through and highlight the terms that most closely target the subject and theme of your web site. Get rid of the other ones, and get rid of the ones for which you don't have sufficient content to cover. Then, create a list of broad and targeted keywords from what you have left. You should now have about 10 to 20 highly focused keywords.

Now, you have to go through your content. For each page, focus on no more than five keywords or you end up diluting your page too much, and you won't rank well on the search engines for your desired terms. Having your keywords in heading tags, most particularly H1 tags help make them more relevant to the search engines. Bolding them and putting them in ordered or unordered lists help highlight them, as well.
